Rockland Electric Project Benefits About 3,000 in Ramsey/Mahwah; Other Projects Include Tree Trimming, Substation Maintenance
Rockland Electric Company is working on a $3.1M electric system storm hardening project designed to improve electric service reliability and strengthen electric system infrastructure for approximately 3,100 of its customers in Ramsey and Mahwah.
The project will replace approximately 5,500 feet of overhead wire on Darlington Ave. in Ramsey between the Darlington substation and S. Jean St. with an underground distribution cable system that will be installed along the path of the current overhead system.
Trenching and other preparations for installation of the underground cable are progressing and should be completed in the spring. Then, the cables will be installed. The project is scheduled for completion by the end of the year.
This project is part of the New Jersey Board of Public Utilities (NJBPU) Infrastructure Investment Program (IIP), a five-year, approximately $47.8-million electric system storm hardening resiliency capital program aimed at significantly improving electric service reliability for Rockland Electric’s 73,000 customers.
The program calls for further undergrounding targeted sections of the overhead electric system and upgrading other key parts of the overhead electric system to help mitigate system outages due to extreme weather-related events. The program began on January 1, 2021, and is slated to continue through December 31, 2027.
Rockland Electric Company will spend a substantial part of the $47.8 million – about $40 million – on selectively undergrounding portions of the company’s electric system to protect it from severe weather damage and related tree impacts.
Those undergrounding locations are chosen strategically by examining a number of factors including, circuit outage frequency statistics, service performance and age of the circuit and population density of the area served by the circuit.
The remaining $7.8M is earmarked for replacing open overhead primary wire with Hendrix spacer cable construction. That installation is designed to be reliable, resistant to tree contact, compact to reduce tree trimming clearances; and supported by high-strength messenger cable to withstand high wind speed.
Rockland Electric Company will be performing electric service reliability improvement work on the overhead circuits that run along Martis, Anne and Rose Avenues in Ramsey later this year. Approximately 1,800 feet of overhead wire will be replaced with underground wire at a cost of approximately $100,000. This storm hardening project will improve electric service for 1,928 customers in Ramsey, Allendale, and Wyckoff,
Rockland Electric Company performed another underground electric distribution improvement project in Ramsey earlier this year. This one was at the Farmington Court subdivision where crews installed 1,900 feet of new primary cable underground to upgrade the underground electric distribution service there. That project was completed on January 19.
Ramsey is served by four substations, all of which are scheduled for vegetation management maintenance between 2025-2027:
- Darlington Substation - scheduled for 2025
- South Mahwah 52 Substation - scheduled for 2026
- Allendale Substation – scheduled for 2026
- Upper Saddle River substation – scheduled for 2027
Additionally, tree trimming on the L652 transmission line currently is scheduled to be performed during the third quarter of 2024.
That work will benefit Ramsey and several neighboring communities: Mahwah, Saddle River, Upper Saddle River, and Montvale.
